On Friday, April 15, the Golden Eagle baseball team took to the field in Caribbean-themed jerseys in honor of one of the University's most famous alumni, Jimmy Buffett. The world-renowned entertainer and 1969 Southern Miss graduate agreed to sign some of the jerseys, as did the nationally-ranked 2011 Golden Eagle baseball team.
The online auction of these autographed jerseys will begin on Monday, May 16, 2011, at 8:00 a.m. Visit SouthernMissAlumni.com and click on the Parrothead Night at the Pete Jersey Auction banner to access the online auction home page. Once the 10-day auction is live, each jersey listed will be a clickable link to the online site where the jerseys are listed. Starting bids for the Jimmy Buffett autographed jerseys will be $250, while the team signed jerseys will open at $100.
Proceeds from the auction of the jerseys will benefit the baseball support organization, the Dugout Club, and a scholarship fund in the name of Buffett's mother, Peets. In each of the past two years, the Alumni Association has awarded multiple $5,000 Mary Loraine Peets Buffett Scholarships to Southern Miss students. Peets Buffett, a 1940 graduate of the Gulf Park College for Women, now the Southern Miss Gulf Park Campus, died in 2003.
