HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The No. 14 Southern Miss baseball team takes to the road for the second consecutive weekend when they play at Conference USA foe Memphis for a three-game set beginning Friday night with a 6:30 start at FedExPark.
The Golden Eagles (22-6 overall, 5-1 C-USA) have won each of its first two league series against ranked opponents, beating Tulane two games to one in the opening weekend and sweeping UCF in Orlando last weekend.
Southern Miss did have a five-game winning streak snapped Tuesday night in a 5-4 loss to Mississippi State in Pearl at Trustmark Park, but the Golden Eagles have seen plenty of success on the road this season. They enter the weekend having accumulated a 9-4 record away from Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field and are 3-1 during this current eight-game stretch on the road.
A tough task awaits the Golden Eagles this weekend as they face a Memphis team that has posted a 17-11 overall record and are 1-2 in league play. Despite holding a 52-41 advantage in the series, and a 34-27 mark over UM since joining Conference USA, Southern Miss has not won a series in Memphis since 2005.
The Tigers enter the series coming off a 9-2 victory over Ole Miss in their most recent outing and have one player, Chad Zurcher, who is hitting .591 for the season. Current C-USA Hitter of the Week Marc Bourgeois continues to lead the Golden Eagles with a .398 batting average. Senior Tyler Koelling, who had driven in a team-high 16 runs in league games, is next at .385. Senior Adam Doleac has posted a .344 batting mark, while Kameron Brunty is collecting a .339 batting clip.
The Golden Eagles will send the trio of right-handed pitchers, Todd McInnis (5-1, 2.70), Geoffrey Thomas (6-1, 1.48) and Jonathan Thompson (3-0, 5.23), respectively, to the mound this weekend. UM will counter with righthander Dan Langfield (2-2, 3.89), southpaw Ryan Holland (4-2, 3.02) and righty Clayton Gant (3-1, 3.58), as their weekend rotation.
All three games can be heard on the Southern Miss Sports Network from IMG College as well as the webcast through All-Access at SouthernMiss.com.
