The Golden Eagles (30-10 overall, 9-3 C-USA) currently hold a 1 ½ game lead in the league standings over second-place Rice. The Pirates are three games back at 8-7 in the league standings and bring in a 27-14 overall record into the set after losing a 5-4 decision at home to North Carolina on Wednesday night.
The program looks to get back on the winning side, after dropping a Tuesday evening matchup with SEC foe Alabama, 7-3, at home, snapping a three. In league play, the team has swept two league series over UCF and Marshall and hold two of the four sweeps in C-USA play this spring.
The two teams renew a short, but exciting rivalry that dates back to the 2002 campaign which was the Pirates first season in C-USA. The Golden Eagles lead the series 17-14 including a three-game sweep at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field in 2010.
Southern Miss enters the weekend with a .312 team batting as six players hold batting marks over the .300 plateau. Senior Tyler Koelling leads the way with a .390 average, followed by senior Marc Bourgeois at .380, senior Adam Doleac at .336, Isaac Rodriguez at .326 and Jared Bales at .324 and Ashley Graeter at .317.
The Golden Eagles will flip their rotation for the weekend as sophomore righthander Geoffrey Thomas (8-2, 2.95) is expected to get the call Friday, while junior righty Jonathan Thompson (5-0, 3.42) should see the mound on Saturday with senior right-handed pitcher Todd McInnis (6-1, 3.01) starting for the Eagles on Sunday.
The games can be heard on one of the affiliates of the Southern Miss Sports Network from IMG College and also the video and audio webstream is available through All-Access at SouthernMiss.com.
Following the ECU series, the Golden Eagles return to action next Wednesday, May 4, when they travel to South Alabama for their final regular-season, non-conference action. First pitch is 6 p.m.
