Women's Tennis Falls to No. 61 Rice

HOUSTON, Texas - The Southern Miss women's tennis team feel to No. 61 Rice 6-1 at the Jake Hess Stadium Saturday in Conference USA play.
The Owls won all but one singles after sweeping the doubles competition to open the match.
Rice improves to 11-8 on the season while Southern Miss slips to 7-10 on the year.
Rice swept the doubles competition to begin the contest as the Rebekka Hanle/Ana Guzman combination defeated Southern Miss' Vroni van Berlo / Alex Bradley team, 8-4, in the No. 1 spot. Alex Rasch/Dominique Harmath defeated Elja van Berlo / Stephanie Dellocono, 8-4, in the No. 2 spot and Jessica Jackson/Kimberly Anicete earned the final doubles victory with an 8-6 defeat of Åsa Bengtson / Zoë Lee in the No. 3 spot.
Rice captured wins in the No. 1, 2 and 5 spots. Hanle captured a No. 1 victory, defeating Vroni van Berlo 6-3, 6-1. At No. 2, Harmath defeated Dellocono 6-2, 6-2. Rasch tacked on another win for the Owls with a 6-1, 6-2 defeat of Lee.
Closing out singles play, Anicete rallied to defeat Elja van Berlo in the No. 4 spot, 6-7, 6-1, 1-0 (10-3), and the No. 3 match ended in favor of Rice's Jackson as she downed Bengtson, 6-0, 7-5.
Rice's only defeat of the evening came in the No. 6 slot as Shannon Rogers defeated Leah Fried 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (10-8).
Southern Miss will play Houston Sunday.
