HATTIESBURG, Miss.- The No. 22 Southern Miss baseball team travels to Zephyr Field in Metairie, La., Wednesday, to face LSU in a 7 p.m., non-conference contest.
The Golden Eagles (27-8) bring a five-game winning streak into the contest, while the Tigers (23-14) come off a series-finale victory at home over Auburn.
This is the second-straight season the two teams have met at Zephyr Field as part of the Wally Pontiff Jr., Baseball Classic, to honor the life of the former LSU baseball player and proceeds of the event going to local charities.
In last year's meeting, the Tigers scored two runs in the bottom of the 12th to ruin a Taylor Walker solo home run in the top of the frame, to take a 6-5 decision in that contest.
The two teams renew a rivalry that began during the 1928 season and have seen the Tigers hold a 35-11 advantage in the series. The last Southern Miss win over LSU came on March 11, 2007, when the Eagles won a 5-3 decision at the original Alex Box Stadium.
It will be the third consecutive week the Golden Eagle have played in a minor league ballpark, which is the home of the Triple A New Orleans Zephyrs, who are affiliated with the Florida Marlins. Southern Miss split a pair of contests at Trustmark Park (home of the AA Mississippi Braves) over the last two weeks in Pearl.
The game can be heard on the Southern Miss Sports Network from IMG College, including flagship station 96.5 (WXHB-FM) in Hattiesburg. The game also will be simulcast on Rock 104.5 (WXRR-FM) with other affiliates carrying the game including 96.7 (WFFF-FM) in Columbia, 620 (WJDX-AM) in Jackson, 96.7 (WUJM-FM), 1490 (WXBD-AM) and 1610 (WTNI-AM) in Biloxi-Gulfport.
In addition, three Louisiana markets, Baton Rouge, New Orleans and Lafayette, will air a television broadcast of the game on Cox 4. The telecast will be produced by the Jumbo Sports Network, with Ken Trahan handling the play-by-play duties and former LSU pitcher Doug Thompson providing color commentary.
Following the LSU contest, the Golden Eagles return to Conference USA action this weekend when they play host to Marshall in a Friday-Saturday series. The two teams open the set with a 6 p.m., contest Friday night and will play a 2 p.m. and 6 p.m., doubleheader on Saturday.
