Southern Miss Rolls to 5-2 Win Over UTEP

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Southern Miss women's tennis team captured a 5-2 win over UTEP at the Racquet Club of Memphis Saturday in Conference USA action.
The Lady Eagles took the early 1-0 lead after sweeping the doubles' competition. Vroni van Berlo and Alex Bradley topped Martina Trierweiler/Rebeca Calvillo (UTEP) 8-6 at No. 1, then Stephanie Dellocono and Elja van Berlo clinched the point with an 8-2 win at No. 2 over Dariya Abdrakhmanova/Alexandra Glebova (UTEP). Åsa Bengtson and Zoë Lee concluded the doubles with an 8-6 win over Gabi Vazquez/Ximena Fuetes (UTEP).
In singles action, Southern Miss took four of the six singles. Dellocono gave the Eagles a 2-0 advantage with a 6-0, 6-1 win on court two against Abdrakhmanova. The Miners registered their first point when Trierweiler defeated Vroni van Berlo, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 1 singles. Elja van Berlo continued her solid play, topping Calvillo 6-3, 6-4 in the No. 3 match. Lee clinched the match for the Golden Eagles with her 6-3, 6-3 win over Glebova at No. 5.
UTEP registered its second point of the morning as Fuetes downed Moorea Williams, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 6.
Åsa Bengtson closed out the match as she outlasted Vazquez, 7-6 (4), 4-6, 1-0 (10-5).
The match between Southern Miss and Memphis will be moved indoors due to forecasted 20 to 30 mph winds. The match is scheduled for a 9 a.m. start.
