HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Southern Miss goes after four consecutive victories to start its 2011 baseball season when they entertain Louisiana-Monroe, Tuesday, at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
The Golden Eagles outscored Eastern Illinois 21-3 in the three-game set over the weekend which saw a three-day attendance total of 10,447, including a opening-day crowd of 3,665.
The team tallied a .327 batting average in the series as senior Adam Doleac tallied a .500 mark, followed by senior Tyler Koelling's .455 with a team-best four runs batted in, and junior Kameron Brunty who notched a .417.
Junior B.A. Vollmuth extended his team-best hitting streak to 23 as he batted .333 over the opening weekend with a home run and three RBI.
Junior righthander Jonathan Thompson is expected to get the starting nod for the Golden Eagles against the Warhawks. Thompson threw the final inning of Friday's season-opening victory, allowing two runs on three hits and three strikeouts.
The Golden Eagles have gotten three solid starting assignments to start the season as a trio of USM hurlers allowed just one run over 21 innings with 11 strikeouts and two walks.
Southern Miss plays a ULM squad that split four games against Texas-San Antonio over the weekend. Corben Green and Les Aulds led the Warhawks offensively in the series by both batting .500 over the weekend against the Roadrunners. Aulds drove in four runs and Green two.
ULM, though, gave up 22 earned runs during the set and posted an 8.47 earned run average in the set. Right-handed pitcher James Jones, who threw 3 2/3 scoreless shutout innings in his lone relief appearance with five strikeouts and two walks, is slated to make the start for the Warhawks.
The homestand for the Golden Eagles finishes, Wednesday, when they take on Alcorn State in a 4 p.m. contest.
