Women's Tennis Takes 4-3 Victory Over UALR

NATCHITOCHES, La. - The Southern Miss women's tennis team won three singles in fighting back from a 3-1 deficit to defeat UALR Saturday at the Jack Fisher Complex.
Åsa Bengtson battled to a three-set victory to clinched the match for the Golden Eagles as Bengtson won her first set, 6-2, dropped the second set, 7-5, then won the third set, 6-2, over Yana Kakovkina.
Southern Miss improved to 2-2 while UALR dropped to 2-4.
The Golden Eagles opened the match with a 1-0 after winning two of the three doubles' matches. Shannon Rogers and Zoë Lee got the Eagles off to a good start with an 8-4 win over Veronique Luksich and Andrea Steen-Rosten at the no. 2 spot. Southern Miss then clinched the doubles' point at the no. 1 position when Bengtson and Elja van Berlo outlasted Viktoriya Pluyta and Nathalia Garay, 8-6. Frances Askew and Alex Bradley dropped their match at no. 3 to Rebecca Van Den Houte and Kakovkina, 8-5.
UALR fought back winning three consecutive single matches. Garay defeated Bradley, 6-1, 6-2, while Van Den Houte downed Rogers, 6-0, 6-4 and Pluyta defeated Moorea Williams, 6-1, 6-4.
With the Trojans leading, 3-1, van Berlo got the Eagles to 3-2, with her 6-3, 6-2, win at no. 2 over Luksich. Lee then followed with a three set winner at no. 5 singles' with a 6-1, 4-6, 6-0, win over Steen-Rosten to set up the final showdown at the no. 1 position.
Southern Miss returns to the court on Sunday with a match against host Northwestern State at 10 a.m.
