Volleyball Travels to Marshall, East Carolina

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss volleyball team is back on the road traveling to Marshall and East Carolina on Oct. 28 and 30, respectively. The Golden Eagles face the Thundering Herd on Friday at 6 p.m. (CT) and take on the Pirates Sunday at 1 p.m. (CT).
Golden Eagle Preview
The Golden Eagles improved to 11-12 overall with a 5-6 record in league play with a 3-0 sweep of UTEP on Friday, Oct. 21 and a 3-2 win against UCF on Sunday, Oct. 23. So far in 2011, five Eagles are averaging 2.00 kills per set or more, including senior Ashley Mell who leads the team with 3.21 kills per set. Junior Halie is not far behind with 2.91 kills per set and seniors Lauren Sears, Amelia Hendrickson and Sarah Jane Bowden are averaging 2.22, 2.20 and 2.03 kills per set, respectively. Senior Kelsea Seymour has been the primary setter this season, averaging 11.04 assists per set. Senior libero Lisa Knecht has a team-high 5.14 digs per set.
Southern Miss vs. Marshall
The Golden Eagles are 5-9 all-time against the Herd. Southern Miss won the first meeting in a 3-0 sweep earlier this season on Oct. 16.
Scouting the Thundering Herd
Marshall is 5-16 overall with a 4-7 record in Conference USA play. Abby Tomas paces the Herd with a 2.93 kill per set average while Sammie Bane guides the offensive with 9.56 assists per set. Ryanne Milligan is averaging 3.37 digs per set while Desirre Wilkerson is averaging 1.00 blocks per set.
Southern Miss vs. East Carolina
Southern Miss is 11-7 all-time against the Pirates. The Golden Eagles haven't lost a match to ECU since Nov. 4, 2007, a 3-0 setback in Greenville. Earlier this season, Southern Miss swept the Pirates at home in Green Coliseum.
Scouting the Pirates
East Carolina is 2-18 overall and 0-11 against C-USA opponents. Britney Roper leads the Pirates with a 2.24 kill per set average. Shelby Beasley leads the defense with 3.68 digs per set while Jackie Varnum owns a 1.02 blocks per set average.
What's Next?
The Golden Eagles are back home for a pair of matches against SMU on Nov. 4 and 5. Both matches will be part of the Annual Dig Pink matches.
