HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss soccer team fell for only the second time at home this season as they lost to East Carolina 4-1 Sunday afternoon at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex.
"We fell behind early today and could not ever rebound," head coach Scott Ebke said. "Ultimately that falls back on me and making sure that they are prepared and ready to go. I did not do a good enough job of that today but we will be prepared to play next week."
The Pirates took control of the game early with a goal in 13th minute by Amanda Malkiewicz who broke away in the middle of the box and finished lower 90.
At the half East Carolina held a slim 1-0 lead but wasted no time getting on the board in the second period, netting their first goal of the second half just 75 seconds in as the Pirates' Bailey Wilcox converted a corner kick.
Wilcox was not finished however as she connected for her second goal of the game in the 62nd minute to put East Carolina up 3-0. ECU finished their scoring in the 72nd as Caty Butler converted on another corner kick.
Southern Miss scored their only goal in the 79th minute on the hustle of Jana Mason. With the ball near the endline, Mason fought for control away from the ECU defender, playing the ball through her legs and crossing into the box where freshman Misca Tice came streaking in to head the ball into the back of the net for her second goal of the season.
"That was just extra individual effort that Jana did a nice job on. If we have that type of effort all over the field we will be fine as the season continues," Ebke added.
Southern Miss returns to action next weekend as the travel to UAB on Friday and Memphis on Sunday.
