HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss soccer team opened the Conference USA portion of their season with a 1-0 loss to Marshall Friday afternoon at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex.
"These games for the rest of the season mean everything now that we have started C-USA Play," Head coach Scott Ebke said. "In the first half we did not play with that much urgency but we made a few corrections at halftime and I thought we executed those better in the second half."
The two teams played a scoreless first half with Marshall controlling the shots, outshooting Southern Miss 8-2.
In the 63rd minute Marshall struck for the games only goal. The Herd capitalized on a Southern Miss foul just outside the box on the left wing and took a dangerous shot that Golden Eagle keeper Hannah Vanderboegh was able to save, but the ball caromed back in the field. Waiting to pick up the rebound was Marshall's Freya Holdaway who finished upper 90 for her first goal of the season and the game winner.
"Give credit to Marshall, they executed on a set piece and that was the difference in the game today. We have to do defend those set pieces better, we did not defend that play with any urgency and ultimately that cost us in the end."
Southern miss returns to action Sunday afternoon as they host East Carolina. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. at the Soccer Complex and admission is free of charge.
