HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss soccer team kept their home record perfect this season with a 2-0 win over Northwestern State Sunday afternoon as the Southern Miss Soccer Complex.
"Our second half was much improved over the first today," head coach Scott Ebke said. "I thought our first 20 minutes today were very good, but overall I am pleased with today's performance. After Friday's game we really wanted to focus on taking care of the ball and when you take care of the ball and posses it that will create chances."
Southern Miss (3-4-1) controlled the game from the opening kick, outshooting Northwestern St. (5-5-0) 19-6 with 11 of those shots on goal. But the Eagles could not find the back of the net in the first half as the two team went into halftime scoreless.
The second half started much like the first half with the two teams battling before the Eagles final converted an opportunity.
In the 60th minute, sophomore Trisha Tillman broke away and played a one vs. one opportunity beating the Demon keeper upper 90 for the games first goal and her second of the season.
The Golden Eagles were able to add an insurance goal in the 75th minute as Jana Mason knocked a perfect pass to freshman Chelsea Cruthirds inside the six yard box that Cruthirds was able to finish inside the near post for her third goal of the season.
Today's win concludes the non-conference portion of the schedule as the Golden Eagles will host Marshall next Friday afternoon. Kickoff is set for 4:00 at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex and admission is free.
