HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss soccer team stayed perfect at home this season with a 6-0 drubbing of Jackson State Sunday afternoon at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex.
"I thought we moved the ball around pretty good today and created a lot of good chances this afternoon," head coach Scott Ebke said. "Coming out and playing a good first half and finding the back of the net early was a big focus for us coming into the game. When you can do that it changes the completion of the game and obviously it did today for us."
The Golden Eagles dominated the game from the opening horn with 13 shots on goal compared to the Tigers five and 11 corner kicks to JSU's two.
Southern Miss tallied 20 points in the game, 14 of those were accounted for by either freshmen or sophomores as 14 underclassmen played in today's contest, seven as starters.
The Golden Eagles opened the scoring in the fifth minute as Jana Mason scored her second goal of the season. Elisha Tarbell his a perfect cross from the right corner that Jordan Wagner flicked to Mason.
Freshman Natasha Lombardo scored her first career goal in the 19th minute as freshman Danielle Beatty served a corner kick into the box that freshman Chanel Elgin passed to Lombardo who gave Southern Miss a 2-0 lead.
The freshmen continued to light up the scoreboard as Chelsea Cruthirds connected on a shot from about 30 yards out far post, upper 90 for her first career goal in the 25th minute. Cruthirds was not done however, as 10 minutes later she picked up a rebound from Stephani Buller off Tricia Tillman's blocked shot and fired it into the net for her second goal of the game, giving Southern Miss a comfortable 4-0 lead at the half.
The second half was much of the same for Southern Miss as Elisha Tarbell connected for her first goal of the season in the 52nd minute. Elgin played the ball into the eight yard box and Wagner passed to the top of the 18 where Tarbell was waiting to finish the goal, giving both Wagner and Elgin their second assists of the game.
With just under four minutes left in the game the Eagles capped their scoring on sophomore Tricia Tillman's first goal of the season. Freshman Carmen Bofill passed to Tillman in the box who finished the goal from point blank range.
Southern Miss returns to action on Friday as they travel to Ole Miss and will put their perfect home record on the line Sunday, Sept. 19 as Northwestern State visits the Southern Miss Soccer Complex. Kickoff is set for 1:00 and admission is free to all home games.
