Volleyball Sweeps Samford

OXFORD, Miss. - The Southern Miss volleyball team used a .361 hitting percentage in sweeping Samford, 25-20, 25-17, 25-13 in the Magnolia Classic.
Junior Ashley Mell led the Golden Eagles with 17 kills while Halie Ecker had 11. Setter Kelsea Seymour tallied 33 assists and libero Lisa Knecht had a match-high 17 digs.
The Eagles used a 6-2 run in the first set to go up 24-20 and used .481 hitting to keep the Bulldogs at bay. Samford made a run with late in the set to get within one, 17-16, but could get no closer. The set ended on a Samford miscue for the 25-20 win.
Southern Miss carried the momentum in the second set, jumping out to a 6-2 lead. Samford eventually cut the lead to three on occasions with the last coming at 13-10. After building a 23-13 lead, Samford used a USM error and three kills to get within 23-17. The Eagles ended the set with a kill by Mell and a Bulldog error for the 25-17 win.
In the third set, Southern Miss led from start to finish. The Eagles led by double-digits in cruising to 25-13 win. Seven different Eagles had a kill, led by Mell's set-high seven. Southern Miss limited the Bulldogs to .044 hitting percentage.
Southern Miss will host in-state rival Mississippi State on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
