STARKVILLE, Miss - Just two days after winning their season opener by a score of 4-0, the Southern Miss soccer team had the tables turned on them as they fell 3-0 at Mississippi State Sunday afternoon.
State jumped out to an early lead with two first half goals and held off Southern Miss' attack in the second half to give the Eagles their first loss of the season.
"It really came down to how we didn't come out ready to compete today," head coach Scott Ebke said. "We were dominated in the first half and as a result, found ourselves down two goals. I was pleased with our second half effort and desire to get back in the game. We created some good chances, but were unable to convert those chances into goals."
In the first half The Bulldogs outshot Southern Miss 12-3 but in the second half it the black and gold that created scoring opportunities outshooting State 11-4 and forcing four corner kicks opportunities.
State's Jasmine Simmons scored the games first goal in the 17th minute off a cross pass she finished from inside the box. The Bulldogs added their second goal of the half in the 32nd minute as Elizabeth Sullivan converted a free kick opportunity.
Madison McKee scored the games only goal in the second half with just under 20 minutes left in the contest as she converted another free kick opportunity.
Southern Miss returns to action next weekend as they travel to Samford on Friday and Vanderbilt on Sunday.
