HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss baseball team jumped out to a 6-1 lead and held on to take the Sunday game by a score of 8-5 to complete the weekend sweep over Houston.
With the three wins over Houston this weekend Southern Miss has now defeated the Cougars 12 of the last 13 times they have meet, dating back to the 2006 season and seven times in a row at Pete Taylor Park.
"I feel like we really have some momentum going for us now," head coach Scott Berry said. "I am real proud of our guys and the job they did to come out this weekend and play all three phases of the game well."
The recipe for success today was much like it was both Friday and Saturday with the Golden Eagle offense giving the pitching staff runs early to work with. Today Southern Miss scored six runs in the first four frames, giving the pitchers a 6-1 lead early on.
Starting pitcher Ryan MacNamara held Houston at bay through the first four innings allowing only one run on five hits, he also benefited from two double play balls. In the fifth he surrendered a hit and walked a batter that both came around to score on a three-run home run off Cody Schlagel.
Schlagel picked up his second win of the season, working three innings while allowing five hits and two runs.
Closer Collin Cargill picked up his second save of the weekend, working the final two innings allowing only one infield hit and striking out three.
The Golden Eagles pounded out 15 hits for the second consecutive game this afternoon and totaled 42 hits in the three game series.
Taylor Walker and B.A. Vollmuth led the attack with three hits and two runs scored a piece. Vollmuth hit what easily appeared to be his ninth home run of the season in the bottom of the first inning on a towering shot over the centerfield wall, but the ball hit a flag pole mounted above the wall and caromed back onto the field. The umpire crew determined that it hit the wall itself and was still in play. He ended up with a RBI triple.
Adam Doleac platted Vollmuth a hitter later with a RBI groundout.
Houston added a RBI single in the top of the third to make the score 2-1.
Southern Miss answered right back as they loaded the bases and Doleac platted another run on a sacrifice fly to score Kameron Brunty who singled earlier in the inning.
The Golden Eagles added a three spot in the bottom of the fourth as Travis Graves hit his fourth home run of the season, a two-run shot and two hitters later Brunty hit his sixth home run of the year, a solo shot to put Southern Miss up 6-1
Houston answered with three runs of their own in the top of the fifth on a Joel Ansley three-run home run.
Southern Miss added their final runs in the bottom of the sixth as Walker singled and Vollmuth executed a perfect hit and run to put runners on the corners. Doleac collected his third RBI of the game on a single through the right side and Mark Ellis hit a sacrifice fly to score Vollmuth.
Houston added their final run in the top of the seventh on a solo home run by Blake Kelso.
Southern Miss will return to action on Wednesday as they host South Alabama, first pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
