Baseball Drops Series Finale at ULL

LAFAYETTE, La. - Louisiana Lafayette scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning breaking a 6-6 tie and went on to win 10-6, preventing being swept out of their own stadium in the three game weekend set.
"We took the series and we are happy to do that but we are still searching for that third starter on Sunday," head coach Scott Berry said. "Our bullpen is questionable when we have to go to it that early. We need guys who can step up and keep the game in check and we did not get that today."
A crowd of 2,386 witnessed the Eagles jump out to a 4-0 lead before ULL tied the game at four after three innings. ULL took their first lead of the series with two runs in the fifth and Southern Miss answered right back with two run in the sixth to tie the game at six, before ULL took the eventually lead in the seventh and added a single run in the eighth.
The Golden Eagles used seven different pitchers on the mound, including five underclassmen. Sophomore Mandella Mingo took the loss, working two-thirds of an inning allowing one run on one hit, but the one run was the go ahead run for ULL.
The Golden Eagles were held to only eight hits, their second lowest total of the season with Anthony Doss collecting three of them.
Southern Miss struck for the games first runs in the top of the second inning putting up three runs, keyed by underclassmen. Sophomore Anthony Doss singled home Ellis, who walked to lead off the inning for the games first run.
With runners on the corners, freshman Travis Creel singled on the first pitch he saw to right field, for his first career hit, scoring freshman Isaac Rodriguez, who singled earlier in the inning.
Freshman Chase Fowler followed with a sacrifice fly driving home the innings third run for the Golden Eagles.
Southern Miss added a run in the top of the third on a Mark Ellis RBI groundout, scoring Taylor Walker who was hit by a pitch, to make the score 4-0.
ULL had their biggest inning of the weekend in the bottom of the fourth as they tied the game at four, keyed by a Jordan Poirrier bases loaded triple.
La.- Lafayette took their first lead of the weekend in the bottom of the fifth as Cody Schlagel loaded the bases and reliever Matt Warren was called for a balk before he delivered his first pitch to put ULL ahead 5-4. The Cajuns added a sacrifice fly for a 6-4 lead.
Southern Miss answered right back with two runs in the top of the sixth as Justin Diliberto singled home Doss and Creel to tie the game at six.
Two RBI singles and a sacrifice fly off three different Southern Miss pitchers in the seventh inning put ULL on top for good and the Cajuns added a unearned run in the ninth.
The Golden Eagles return to action on Wednesday as the host Troy at "The Pete."
