HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Lady Eagle Tennis team finished the second half of their four match roadtrip with a pair of games in Louisiana as they defeated New Orleas 4-2 but fell to Louisiana-Lafayette but the same score.
On Friday, Southern Miss (9-8) faced off against New Orleans in a sort of homecoming for senior Lauren Gutterman and redshirt junior Stephanie Dellocono.
In doubles action, Dellocono and Gutterman took down Ceara Howey and Amber Garza 8-4 while sisters Elja and Vroni van Berlo blanked their opponents to secure the doubles point for Southern Miss.
The van Berlo duo kept their winning ways alive through singles action as Vroni defeated Cassandra Escobar 6-4, 6-2 while Elja defeated Kristina Martic 6-1, 6-0.
At No. 4 singles, Gutterman blanked Garza in the first set and Garza was forced to retire in the second to give Southern Miss the fourth and deciding point.
On Saturday, the duo from Louisiana made it a perfect 2-0 in doubles as they defeated Milou Israel and Audrey Wooland, 9-8.
With the two wins, Dellocono is No. 4 in all time career doubles victories with 52 while Gutterman is No. 3 with 60. Gutterman needs just four more doubles victories to hold the career record outright and three to tie Ali Blacklett who played for Southern Miss from 2004-2008.
In other doubles action, both the van Berlo duo and juniors Zoe Lee and Shannon Rogers fell to give UL the doubles point.
At singles, only Lee and Rogers were able to pick up points for the Lady Eagles as they fell 4-2.
Southern Miss now returns home for a four game homestand at the Southern Miss Tennis Complex. They will host Jackson State Wednesday, March 31 with first serve set for 2 p.m. (CT)
