Baseball Takes Game Two Against LeMoyne, 10-3

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The No. 21 ranked Southern Miss baseball team scored early and often while improving to 4-2 on the season with a 10-3 victory over LeMoyne College Saturday afternoon in from of 3,458 fans at Pete Taylor Park
Scott Copeland turned in his second consecutive quality start this afternoon, working seven innings and striking out a career high seven batters to pick up his first win on the year.
"Give Copeland a lot of credit today," head coach Scott Berry said. "It is always key any time you can get your starter deep in the game and he gave us seven good innings today and the offense stepped up and supported him this afternoon."
Freshman Paxton King worked the final two innings allowing only two hits and no runs.
BA Vollmuth led the offensive charge with four hits, two RBI and a run scored, his first career four hit game. Mark Ellis added three RBI on a mammoth three-run home run and freshman Isaac Rodriguez had three hits and a RBI is his first career start.
In all Southern Miss pounded out 14 hits, the fifth time this season they have had over 10 hits, and scored 10 or more runs for the third time this season
Southern Miss also turned another double play in the game, their 12th of the season and 11th consecutive game with a double play dating back to 2009. They led the nation in twin-killings last season with 83.
The Golden Eagle offense looked to be back to normal in the top of the first inning as Justin Diliberto walked to start the inning and Taylor Walker was hit by the first pitch he saw.
BA Vollmuth picked his sixth RBI of the season with a single to right and Joey Archer platted Walker with a sacrifice fly to right field for an early 2-0 lead.
The rally continued as Mark Ellis drew a two-out walk and came around to score on a single by freshman Isaac Rodriguez to make the score 3-0.
The black and gold struck for three more runs in the bottom of the second as Tyler Koelling and Taylor Walker drew walks to start the rally. BA Vollmuth worked the count to 3-2 and with the runners moving on the pitch doubled down the left field line.
An errant throw by LeMoyne's left fielder allowed both Walker and Vollmuth to score and put Southern Miss up 6-0.
Tyler Koelling led off the bottom of the third with a single and stole second base before Taylor Walker picked up the RBI with a single to left-field making the score 7-0.
LeMoyne cracked the scoreboard with two runs in the top of the fifth and a single run in the top of the sixth inning.
The Golden Eagles finished off the scoring in the bottom of the eight as Mark Ellis launched a three-run home run over the scoreboard, it was his first career home run.
The two teams will play the rubber game of the series tomorrow morning with an 11:00 a.m. first pitch. Both teams will send freshmen to the mound as Geoffrey Thomas toes the rubber for Southern Miss while LeMoyne will counter with 6'5" RHP Jerome Werniuk.
