HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss men's golf coach Jerry Weeks announced the signing of Casey Fernandez of McAlester, Okla., to a national letter-of-intent for the 2011-12 season, Monday morning.
Fernandez is the top-ranked junior golfer in Oklahoma by JuniorGolfScorecard.com, and the 175th-rated golfer nationally. This year, he played in 10 junior events, earning three victories, six Top Five finishes, seven Top 10 Finishes and nine Top 20's.
The McAlester, Okla., native is the two-time defending medalist at the Texas-Oklahoma Boys Open Championship. It is his third straight Top Ten finish at the Open, as he took home a tenth-place finish in 2008.
As a junior last year, he led McAlester High School to the 2010 Oklahoma Class 5A Regional Championship, while also earning medalist honors. In the state tournament, he finished as the runner-up after closing the tournament in a tie for first, leading to a four-hole playoff while helping McAlester to a sixth-place finish.
In September, he won the Oklahoma Junior Golf Tour's (OJGT) John Conrad Labor Day Classic, firing round of 71 and 68 for a total of 139. In eight rounds on the OJGT this year, Fernandez has a stroke average of 74.125.
