HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Southern Miss Head Women's Basketball Coach Joye Lee-McNelis has announced the signing of Wendy Miller of Palatka, Fla., to a national letter of intent and grant-in-aid for the 2011-12 academic year.
"We are excited to add our first high school player to our 2010-11 recruiting class," McNelis said. "Wendy is a 6-foot player who brings versatility to our team. She has the ability to play several positions and is expected to make a difference in her first season. Wendy is a young lady that committed to us in the early fall and remained loyal throughout her recruiting process. She will excel as a Lady Eagle on and off the floor."
Miller, a 6-0 forward, averaged 8.0 points and 8.1 rebounds as a junior at Palatka High School. She is a four-year letterwinner for Coach Kenny Isom. She finished second in the district in rebounds and third in blocked shots. Miller earned all-county honors for three seasons and was named to the Kiwanis Invitational Basketball Tournament Matanzas High School all-tournament team.
"I chose Southern Miss because I felt comfortable on campus," said Miller. "The coaches work with the players on and off the court. They have a wonderful support system. The students and the professors at Southern Miss remind me of my hometown in a way because of their sincerity."
Miller played AAU with the FGB Elite team that finished with a 28-5 record during the summer.
"Wendy Miller is a great kid who's extremely athletic and has a tremendous upside. She's a four year letterman in basketball and as a junior finished 2nd in the district in rebounds and 3rd in blocked shots. She also added 3 steals per game. Wendy is an awesome leader and although she could be dominating, she is willing to contribute to the team in any manner asked. I am extremely proud to have known her as well as coached her," Isom said.
