HATTIESBURG, Miss - The Southern Miss soccer team dropped a 2-0 match to visiting Rice Friday afternoon at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex.
The Conference USA leading Owls improved to 8-5 overall and 5-0 in C-USA play while the Eagles dropped to 3-9-1 and 0-5 in C-USA action.
"The difference in winning and losing games in this conference is finishing your chances and not giving up chances on the defensive end," head coach Scott Ebke said. "We have to do a better job of finishing the chances we create if we want to get positive results in conference play."
Rice opened the scoring in the 19th minute as Annie Kadota broke away from the Southern Miss defenders and beat Golden Eagle keeper Lindsey Schwarner one-v-one to the lower 90, far post for the games first goal.
Though Southern Miss had several dangerous scoring opportunities, the game remained a slim 1-0 Rice lead until the 88th minute when the Owls took advantage of the Golden Eagle offense pressing players forward and put the game away with their second goal. Korey Taylor passed from the right wing into the box where Amy Berger one-touched to Jessica Howard to finish the goal.
Rice doubled up Southern Miss in shots, 24-12 and tallied 10 shots on goal to the Eagles' four in the match.
Southern Miss returns to the pitch Sunday afternoon as they host Houston at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex. Kickoff is set for 1:00 and admission is free to everyone.
