HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss battled Houston for 110 minutes and came away with 1-1 tie Sunday afternoon at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex.
"We competed for 110 minutes today and that was good to see," head coach Scott Ebke said. "We proved that we can play and when this team believes it can do something the chances are there for us. With the way we competed today I was a little disappointed we could not come away with the win, but very pleased with the result."
Houston (9-3-2, 4-1-1 C-USA) struck for the games first goal with just two seconds left in the opening half, converting a corner kick from Jasmine Martinez to Kaci Bush who headed in her first goal of the season.
The game remained a 1-0 Cougar lead until the 81st minute when Southern Miss (3-9-2, 0-5-1 C-USA) converted a corner kick of their own. Freshman Chelsea Cruthirds served the kick into the box from the left wing where Jane Mason headed it to freshman Chanel Elgin who emerged from a mob of players to put the ball in the back of the net. For Elgin it was her first career goal.
"Probably over half the goals scored in our conference have been off set pieces, such as corner kicks. It has been a big urgency for us to be better defending them and to execute them offensively. Obviously, giving up a goal with seconds left in the half is not what we want to do, but converting a corner opportunity in the final 10 minutes was a huge lift for this team," Ebke said.
Once the teams entered the overtime period both teams had a couple of quality of chances to score, but none more that the Golden Eagles opportunity in the 98th minute. Sophomore Trisha Tillman broke away inside the box and fired a shot that Houston keeper Camille Koski punched back off the crossbar to preserve the tie.
"We had some chances today and the players have to be confident that they can make the shots and they have to put the ball on the frame," Ebke added.
Southern Miss will continue C-USA play next weekend as they travel to UTEP and Colorado College.
