SOUTHERN MISS ATHLETIC MEDIA RELATIONS Post Game Quotes Head Coach Larry Fedora
Opening Statement: "Obviously that was a devastating game for our team. It was a game of many, many, many, many missed opportunities. I do not want to take anything away from UAB because they made the plays to win the football game and we did not. It is as simple as that. It is going to be tough to win a football game when you turn the ball over four times. It's really amazing that we were even in it. We had some guys make some plays but give them the credit, they made the play when they needed to make one. We had trouble stopping the run all day and again you have to give their offensive line credit. They did a good job up front.
On the way they used Kendrick Hardy: "He was not able to go towards to the end and we were trying to do something different there on the goal line to end the first half. Again, we fumbled the snap on third down and on the six-inch line you cannot do that. That is as basic as it gets; snapping the ball from the center to QB. That has to be executed and we did not do it.
On the fourth down play call in the fourth quarter to Johdrick Morris: "That was my call. It was actually a run-pass deal. He was going to throw it if we had a guy that slipped out but they sniffed it out and did a great job. It was a bad call on my part."
On Austin Davis' play in the first half: "We threw one pick in the first half. The second half pick was really ours. We thought we saw a blitz that they were doing and we could slip someone out on it and they really were not in the blitz. I thought he did alright. We had some dropped balls early in the game that were disappointing. We did not make some plays we should have made. We put the ball on the ground twice after two nice catches and runs."
On the devastation of this Loss: "I can promise you that is what they are feeling right now. That is the game of football. We had many opportunities but you cannot sit there and worry about them. So what we will do is come back on Sunday and move on. We will get back in here and go to work and get ready for the next one. We are not going to get better by worrying about what just happened. I can promise you that. We will look at it, make the corrections, and get better from it. We will be a better football team.
On the injuries today: "Tracey Lampley was out early. He told me he could not go and Kendrick (Hardy) could not go there late. Korey (Williams) did something late. I do not know what it was. They just told me he could not go.
"We have had so many injuries this year that we cannot worry about them. We just have to move on to the next guy and the next guy has to step up and make plays."
On Not Stopping UAB on Fourth Down: "I think that kills you. They were three-of four on fourth downs. They made the critical conversions they needed to make to win the game. That kills your momentum. It kills a lot of things because the defense stopped them and got it to fourth down and they score a touchdown on it. That is where someone has to step up and make a play."
On Kendrick Hardy: "He ran the ball hard. That is what he has been doing which is why he is getting more time. The kid runs hard and is playing hard and doing a good job."
On the slow start: "That is my responsibility to have them ready to roll. But for whatever reason they looked very, very sluggish and I do not know what the reason is to be honest with you."
On the end of the first half: "I was just going to try and run the ball in on the sneak and that was going to be it. Then we dropped the ball and that changes everything. So it was down to one play and we missed a block up front and the guy got penetration. There is no way that can happen on that play but it did. That is where their guy made a play and ours did not.
"It was a turning point. We score right there before the half and the game is different but we did not. It was disappointing. Again, it kills your momentum and gives them the momentum going right into the half."
On Kelvin Bolden: "He had 10 catches for 132 yards. He did a great job for us. He is becoming more and more of a play maker for us each and every week. He is a guy who now feels comfortable in what we are doing and there are a lot of different ways we can get him the ball. He is playing really well for us right now."
Southern Miss Postgame Player Quotes
Sophomore LB Jamie Collins
On the slow start to the game: "They jumped on us early and we were slow (during the early going), but we picked up as the game went. I guess they had guys that just wanted it more I guess."
On their Running Game: "We don't need to worry about how good our defense is, we just have to go out and play ball."
On stopping them on the ground: "We knew that they were going to come in and try to run the ball and that that was one of the keys to victory. They have a pretty good rusher (Shed). We just knew that we had to be on top of our game."
Junior WR Kelvin Bolden
On the mood of the locker room: "You could hear a pin drop. It was very quiet. We fought in the second half, I just wish we could have fought in the first half."
On the slow start: "We just didn't play our game in the first half. I wish we could have, but we just didn't play our game in the first half. We cranked it up in the second half, but things happen."
On have two one-point losses at home: "It is very tough. It leaves a bad taste in your mouth., but we have to fight back and keep playing the rest of the season and take one game at a time. We have to put this game behind us because it is over with."
On Kendrick Hardy: "Kendrick Hardy is like a horse. Just keep giving him the ball and he will keep pushing."
Freshman RB Kendrick Hardy
Some short yardage situations at the end of the game, how badly did you want to be out there: "I really wanted to be out there because I am pretty sure I could have got them, but things happen (bruised quad). You just have to run hard (when you have the opportunity)."
On the loss: "It was bad. We came in ready to play, but things happen and you have to rebuild and get ready for Tulane this week."
On wanting this breakout game: "I have been wanting to be out there since the beginning of the season."
Junior QB Austin Davis
On the team's play: "Obviously we didn't play like we wanted to in the first half, but we fought hard in the second half but it just wasn't enough. I t was a little too late."
On comparing this year's game to last year's: "Last year was last year. This is a new year, so that really doesn't matter. We didn't get it done tonight."
On the significance of this game in terms of the Conference USA race: "It was a game we needed to win, a game we should have won at home. So we just have to see."
On the offense's performance: "We scored two touchdowns in overtime and we put our defense in some bad situations including one with an interception. Then, not getting in at the one, so by no means (despite the 49 points) did we play a 49-point offense. We scored two overtime touchdowns, which is good, but we still didn't play the offense we could play in the first half and it came back to get us."
