HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss football team went through its second scrimmage of the spring practice window on Saturday at Carlisle-Faulkner Field at M.M. Roberts Stadium.
The temperature soared into the mid-80s by the end of practice, but that didn't stop the Golden Eagles from getting live action. Practice started with individual position group work before transitioning into the live portion of the two-hour practice. John White and Grant Page got the scrimmage started with a touchdown pass and catch from inside the red zone. After the quick start from the offense, the defense settled in and quickly tallied two pass breakups from Jyaire Brown.Â
"There was good energy again today, and I thought the guys played well for what we did today," said head football coach Blake Anderson. "We've got one more week left to get some work done before we end it with the event next Saturday."
Jonah Martinez followed that with a pick-six, then Peyton Anderson got involved with a sack a few plays later. Page continued his productive day as he caught a 35-yard pass from Landry Lyddy in the third-down period. Both Jaylen Foster and Steven Robinson added rushing touchdowns at the end of the scrimmage, while Foster's run ended the scrimmage for Anderson's squad.Â
Following the scrimmage, the Golden Eagles enjoyed lunch in the South End Zone with former Southern Miss players. Today's practice was an alumni reunion as former players from several eras watched practice and talked with current Golden Eagles.Â
"That's such a big piece of this. They built this place so we could be part of this story," Anderson said. "We wanted to invite them back so they know this will always be home, whether we invite them or they just show up to practice."
