Women's Tennis Team Goes 1-2 on the Day

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss women's tennis team finished the first day of the annual Halloween Classic with a 1-2 record.
In the opening match, the Golden Eagles fell to Louisiana by a score of 4-1. Senior Stephanie Dellocono (Baton Rouge, La.) won the only match, posting a 6-2, 6-3 win over Tara Vasovic (UL).
Elja van Berlo lost to Audrey Wooland (UL) in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, while Vroni van Berlo dropped her match to Julie Mazinova (UL), 6-3, 6-2. Åsa Bengtson lost to Milou Isrea (UL), 6-3, 6-1.
Briggitt Marcovich and Sandra Ahlquist (UL) outlasted Zoë Lee and Shannon Rogers in doubles, 8-6.
In the midday match, the Golden Eagles took on UTM and lost in a close one, 3-2. Dellocono and Vroni van Berlo took the doubles' point with an 8-2 win over Alice Laing and Katie McCall.
In the singles, Lee down Anna Marie Herbold (UTM) by a score of 7-6 (5), 6-0. Bengtson lost to Jodie Tiley (UTM) in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. Moorea Williams lost to Anna Winkelman (UTM) in three sets, 1-6, 2-6, 13-11 before Rogers lost to Ivon Simic (UTM) in a three-set match as well, 6-2, 5-7, 10-7.
USM concluded the day with a win over a short-handed Louisiana Tech team, 5-0. Dellocono and Vroni van Berlo won the doubles' by a score of 8-2 over Elne Barnard and Anna Zureck (LT).
Lee and Rogers earned wins by defaults. Williams claimed a straight set win over Alena Erofeyeva (LT), 6-1, 7-5, while Elja van Berlo had to go to a third set to pull out a 6-2, 5-7, 10-7 win over Sophie Heldoorm (LT).
The tennis action continues Saturday at 9:30 a.m., as all 10 teams will be on the courts.
