HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss soccer team opened their final home weekend of the season with a 3-1 loss to SMU Friday afternoon at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex.
"I thought we started pretty flat but ironically that's when we got a goal, just eight minutes in," head coach Scott Ebke said. "SMU turned up the heat a little bit and scored on two free kicks and that was ultimately the difference in the game."
Southern Miss started the game fast with a goal in the eighth minute set up by a corner kick. Freshman Chanel Elgin took a good shot that was blocked out of bounds by a SMU defender earning the Golden Eagles a corner. Elisha Tarbell served the ball to the top of the box where freshman Mischa Tice headed it towards the net. Sophomore Tricia Tillman took the ball and passed it backwards to a sliding Elgin who found the back of the net for her second goal of the season, giving Southern Miss a 1-0 lead.
The Eagles lead was shot lived as the Mustangs tied the game in the in the 26th minute as Kristen Medeiros took a wide open shot from the corner of the 18 that scored in the upper 90.
SMU answered that goal quickly as just under two minutes later they found the back of the net again to take the lead on a goal by Amanda Burgardt for a 2-1 lead.
"They hit us for two goals in less than two minutes. Once you give up a goal you have to be mentally locked in and I do not think we were when that second goal happened," Ebke added.
The Mustangs added an insurance goal in the 67th minute to make the score 3-1.
Southern Miss will return to action on Sunday as they host Tulsa for senior day and the final home game of the 2010 season. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. and the senior presentation will begin about 12:40 p.m. Admission is free to everyone.
"I am proud of our four seniors who are getting ready to play their last home game here on Sunday and we will have a presentation for them before the game starts so I hope everyone will come out to support them when they put on the black and gold for the final time at home," Ebke said.
