El Paso, Texa - Southern Miss opened the Conference USA weekend road trip with a 2-0 loss at UTEP Friday evening.
"I am proud of our effort tonight," head coach Scott Ebke said. "We battled until the end and had our chances all the way until the final whistle."
Southern Miss (3-10-2, 0-6-1 C-USA) kept the Miners off the board until the final minute of the first half when UTEP's Katie Dorman connected on a long range shot with just 25 second left in the half.
"Giving up goals late in the half is something we must improve so we do not continue to dig ourselves in a hole going into the half," Ebke added.
UTEP (10-5-0, 3-4-0 C-USA) capitalized that momentum to open the second period as they netted their second goal just over three minutes into the half. Brittany Kindzierski hit a cross from the right wing that Skye Shultz finished to give UTEP a 2-0 lead.
Southern Miss returns to action on Sunday as they continue C-USA play at Colorado College.
