Women's Tennis Team Falls to No. 21 Ole Miss

OXFORD, Miss. -- The No. 21 nationally ranked Ole Miss women's tennis team swept Southern Miss 7-0 Tuesday afternoon at the Gillom Sports Center.
The Rebels captured all three doubles and then captured wins at one, two and three singles to secure the win. Southern Miss dropped to 0-2 on the season.
OIe Miss took the 1-0 lead after posting wins in all three doubles. The Rebles opened the match with an 8-0 win at No. 3 doubles when Abby Guthrie and Laura van de Stroet defeated Zoe Lee and Shannon Rogers. Ole Miss secured the doubles' point when Connor Vogel and Gabby Rangel (OM) knocked off Stephanie Dellocono and Lauren Gutterman, 8-5. No. 7 ranked Kristi Boxx and Karen Jijssen (OM) capped off the doubles' sweep with an 8-4 win over Elja and Vroni van Berlo.
In singles' play, freshman Vroni van Berlo lost to No. 40 Boxx at No. 1 singles by a score of 6-3, 6-0. Ole Miss went up 3-0 after No. 101 Guthrie (OM) downed Elja van Berlo, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 3. Dellocono battled Karen Nijssen (OM) at No. 2 singles, but fell 6-2, 6-4.
Rounding out the singles' play was Rangel (OM) topping Zoe Lee 6-1, 6-3 at No. 6, while No. 119 Connor Vogel (OM) downed Gutterman 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4 and then Laura van de Stroet (OM) defeated Frances Askew, 6-4, 6-0 at No. 4.
Southern Miss returns to action on Feb. 7 when the Golden Eagles travel to Lorman, Miss., to take on Alcorn State at 1:30 p.m.
