HATTIESBURG, Miss - Southern Miss and UAB played a very even contest but the Blazers scored the only goal of the game in the 82nd minute for a 1-0 victory Sunday afternoon at the Southern Miss soccer complex.
"I thought we matched up very well with UAB it was just one of those games that whoever could score one goal was going to win," head coach Scott Ebke said. "Their extra effort on one play was the difference, we had our chances but could not convert them today."
The two teams played a scoreless, physical game on a very wet and muddy field before UAB's Laura McCalla was able to finish an opportunity from inside the box in the final 10 minutes of the game.
"It is a game of finishing your chances and UAB was able to finish on one play and we could not. It is a disappointing loss because we played well enough to win today," Ebke added.
Southern Miss played two of the top teams in C-USA from last season and the defense held very well playing a nearly perfect first half vs. Memphis on Friday and holding UAB scoreless for 82 minutes today.
"Defensively we are very sound, but we have to take some responsibility to get a ball in the net on the other end to relieve some pressure off the defense. I am proud of our backline and Holly (Cox) for the way they played this weekend," Ebke said.
Southern Miss will hit the road for the first time in C-USA play as they travel to East Carolina and Marshall next weekend.
