Southern Miss Volleyball Falls to Marshall In Four

HUNTINGTON, W. Va. - The Southern Miss volleyball team fell to Marshall in four sets, (18-25, 19-25, 25-15, 24-26), falling to 13-3 on the year and 1-1 in league play.
Ashley Mell recorded a double-double with a team-high 11 kills and 19 digs. Sarah Jane Bowden and Angela Hlavaty tallied eight kills apiece. Bowden had six total blocks.
Marshall rolled out to the early 12-6 lead to start the first set, but Southern Miss eventually cut the deficit to two, 18-16, behind kills from five different Eagles. Following a Marshall timeout, the Herd then closed out the set with a 7-2 run to the 25-18 victory.
A block by Herman and Sullivan, two kills, an ace and three Southern Miss miscues helped the Herd roll to an early 7-3 lead in the second set. The Eagles battled back to cut the lead to one on four occasions, but Marshall continued to keep its lead throughout the set in the 25-19 win.
Southern Miss jumped out to a commanding 10-3 lead to open the third set. Following a Sullivan kill for Marshall, the Eagles then put up seven consecutive points to take a 17-4 lead. From there Southern Miss cruised to a 25-15 win.
Both teams battled back-and-forth to start the fourth set. The set featured 19 ties and five lead changes. Neither team was able to build any kind of lead against each other. With the score knotted at 23-23, Caitlin Clark put down a kill, giving Southern Miss a 24-23 lead, but Marshall came back with a kill and two big blocks to take the final set, 26-24.
