MARTIN, Tenn. - The Southern Miss soccer team used two second half goals in the final ten minutes of the game to come from behind and take the opening match of the Puma Skyhawk Invitational, 3-1, against Murray State (1-3) Friday afternoon on the campus of Tennessee Martin University.
"We played some of our best soccer of the season in the last 20 minutes or so this afternoon," head coach Scott Ebke said. "I am proud of this win today but for us to be successful as this season goes on we need to come out and start faster."
The Golden Eagles (3-2) fell behind early as the Racers Sophie Hargraves connected on a free kick from 25 yards out for a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute of the contest.
Southern Miss tied the game in the 28th minute off a corner kick served in the box by Keilah Hopkins where Renee Hrapmann was able to one-touch the ball into the back of the net for her first goal of the season.
The game remained tied until the final ten minutes of the contest before Southern Miss was able to tally two goals in under a minute.
At the 79:13 mark Jana Mason scored her first goal of the season, the eventual game winner, from the top of the box on an assist from Hrapmann for a 2-1 Southern Miss lead.
Then 54 seconds later, at the 80:07 mark, the Golden Eagles found the back of the net again as freshman Kristen Windecker scored her first career goal to put the game away, it was assisted by Jana Mason and Stefani Buller.
Mason attempted the original shot but was tackled by a diving Murray State keeper in the middle of her back kick, fortunately she was able to get just enough of the ball that Buller could pick it up and cut it back to a Windecker who connected with a empty net from about four yards out.
Holly Cox improved to 3-1 between the pipes this season with four saves on the afternoon and the Southern Miss backline had another outstanding game.
The Golden Eagles return to the field again on Sunday as they face Tournament host Tennessee Martin, kickoff is set for 3:00 p.m.
