HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss soccer team won their second consecutive home game with a 2-0 victory of visiting Southeastern Louisiana Sunday afternoon at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex.
"I thought we came out with a lot of energy today," head coach Scott Ebke said. "We worked very hard on created chances and we were able to not only create those chances this afternoon but capitalize on them."
The Golden Eagles (2-2-0) were able to attack but it was two second chances that put Southern Miss on the board this afternoon.
In the 24th minute sophomore Stefani Buller penetrated the box and fired a shot that Southeastern Louisiana keeper Lacey Bockhaus was able to save with her hands but she could not catch the ball, ricocheting it to the feet of senior Keilah Hopkins who knocked it into the back of the net for her first career goal.
In the 40th minute it was much of the same as senior Daniela Picado fired a shot from inside the box the hit the far post but bounced right back to her allowing a second chance shot she would not miss on as she found the back of the net for her fourth goal in the last three games.
"Daniela has a killer instinct mentality," Ebke added. "She has really but herself in great position over the last week and has picked up four goals from it."
On the defensive side Southern Miss keeper Holly Cox recorded five saves in her first shutout of the season and seventh of her career.
All four Golden Eagle defenders played the entire 90 minutes today including freshman Caitlin Leumas who played outstanding in her first career start filling in for an injured Liz Hamlin. Also on the back line was Amy Davis, Erin Hamrick and Samantha Polley.
The Golden Eagles will be off next Friday but return to the pitch on Sunday as they host instate rival Ole Miss. Kickoff is set for 3:00 p.m. at the Southern Miss soccer complex.
