Baseball Wins Regular Season Finale Over Tenn Tech

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss scored seven runs on 10 hits to win their regular season finale over Tennessee Tech, 7-2, at Pete Taylor Park Saturday afternoon.
"We got very good pitching today," head coach Corky Palmer said. "A new season starts on Wednesday and we have to play to win it."
Jeff Stanley gave Southern Miss a quality start on the mound, working six scoreless innings, allowing only three hits and striking out three. Scott Copeland worked two innings in relief allowing only two hits and two unearned runs.
Southern Miss closer Collin Cargill pitched for the first time in nearly two weeks, working a prefect ninth inning with a strikeout.
Corey Stevens led the offensive charge today with three hits, a single, double and home run and three RBI to go along with a run scored.
BA Vollmuth hit his second home run of the season, a three run shot in the fifth inning.
Corey Stevens opened the scoring in the bottom of the sixth inning as he lasted his seventh home run of the season, a solo shot to left-center field to put Southern Miss on top 1-0.
Stevens platted the second run of the game in the top of the third with an RBI single through the right side, allowing Bo Davis to score from second base and put the black and gold up 2-0.
Southern Miss put up a four spot in the bottom of the fifth inning, Kameron Brunty ripped a triple off the right field wall to lead off the inning, his fourth of the season and came in to score on Corey Fields RBI groundout, his third RBI of the game.
Freshman BA Vollmuth blasted his second home run of the season, a three-run shot over the left field wall to put Southern Miss up 6-0.
Tennessee Tech added two unearned runs in the top of the eighth as inning as AJ Kirby-Jones hit a high fly ball to right field with the bases loaded that Michael Ewing dropped allowing two runs to score.
Southern Miss added their final run in the bottom of the eighth inning as Bo Davis led off with a double before James Ewing sacrificed him to third. Kameron Brunty hit a fly ball that TTU left fielder Alex Henry dropped, though it was deep enough for Davis to tag and score on, allowing Davis to score the seventh and final run.
Southern Miss returns to action on Wednesday at Pete Taylor Park in the 2009 Conference USA Tournament. Southern Miss will be the five seed and play Tulane, who earned the four seed, at 7:30 p.m.
