Southern Miss Loses Close Match to UAB, 4-3

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. Southern Miss lost a close match to UAB after winning the doubles competition in Northridge, California on Sunday.
The Lady Eagles took an early lead in the close match, winning the doubles competition. Hollie Robinson and Shannon Rogers defeated Jenny Cape and Ceylan Engin, 8-5. Zoe Lee and Alexandra Kaluza also tallied at win at No. 3, defeating Brittany DeFelice and Jessica Orton, 8-3. Elja van Berlo and Lauren Gutterman fell just short to Paula Alvarez and Evelien Strijker, 9-8.
UAB caught up in the singles competition, tallying four wins. Southern Miss earned wins in the No. 4 and No. 6 positions, as Lauren Gutterman defeated Brittany DeFelice, 6-0, 6-4 and Shannon Rogers defeated Ceylan Engin, 2-0, 6-0. Elja van Berlo was defeated by Evelien Strijker after three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 6-0. Alexandra Kaluza also came up short, losing to Paula Alvarez, 6-2, 6-1. Hollie Robinson fell to Giorgia Romeo at No. 3, 7-5, 6-3, while Zoe Lee lost to Jenny Cape, 6-3, 6-4.
The Lady Eagles will return to action in Northridge, Calif., as they play Cal State Northridge Monday at 2:00 p.m.
