HATTIESBURG, Miss. - - No. 7 Cal State Fullerton pounded out 22 hits and scored 15 runs to defeat No. 27 Southern Miss 15-2 Friday evening in front of 4,011 fans at Pete Taylor Park.
Southern Miss was held to under 10 hits for the first time this season as three different Fullerton pitchers held the Golden Eagle offense in check tonight.
"We did not match up well in our Friday night pitching and if you don't match up early and fall behind that makes it a very tough thing when you are facing your opponent's best pitcher. That's what happened and then it just snowballed from there," head coach Corky Palmer said.
Fullerton struck for the games first run in the top of the first on a RBI single by Jared Clark, scoring Josh Fellhauer who singled earlier in the inning for a 1-0 lead. Southern Miss starting pitcher Todd McInnis was able to work out of a jam and leave the bases loaded surrendering only one run on four hits, he received some help from Kameron Brunty as he threw out Christian Colon from centerfield trying to take third base on a single by Fellhauer.
Fullerton (7-2) struck again in the second inning as Gary Brown picked up an RBI on a fielders choice the Fellhauer hit a three-run home run over the center field wall for a 5-0, ending the day for McInnis after working only 1.1 innings and surrendering five runs on eight hits.
New Golden Eagle pitcher Moses Munoz could not stop the bleeding as Nick Ramirez delivered an RBI double and Joe Scott picked up three RBI on a bases loaded double down the right field lien to make the score 9-0.
Fullerton added five more runs in the top of the third on three home runs, with a two-run shot by Clark, a solo shot by Ramirez and a two-run home run by Dustin Garneau.
Munoz's ended the day after 1.2 innings allowing nine runs on eight hits while striking out one and walking two.
Seth Hester had the best outing of the evening for Southern Miss, working four innings without allowing an earned run and only three hits while striking out two.
"I thought the only shining moment tonight was the way Hester threw, he proved tonight he wants back in the mix for some innings this season," Palmer added.
Fullerton added an earned run in the sixth aided by a Taylor Walker error allowing Shevis Shima to score.
Southern Miss (8-2) finally cracked the scoreboard in the seventh inning as Corey Stevens delivered an RBI infield single to score Kameron Brunty who walked earlier in the inning.
The Golden Eagles struck again in the bottom of the eighth inning as Brian Dozier delivered a bases loaded single to score Kyle Maxie who singled to lead off the inning making the score 15-2.
The hit by Dozier extended his hitting streak to 10 games on the season.
The two team will face off again tomorrow in game two of the series. Cody Schlagel (2-0, 2.25 ERA) will start for Southern Miss and he will face Kyle Whitten (1-0, 4.50 ERA) for Fullerton. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m. at Pete Taylor Park.
