Baseball Drops 9-2 Affair with La. Monroe

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Louisiana Monroe starting pitcher Don Williams threw a complete game four-hitter as La. Monroe defeated Southern Miss 9-2 at Pete Taylor Park Tuesday evening.
"Monroe simply outplayed us in every area tonight," head coach Corky Palmer said. "We are still a very inconsistent team, we can look very good one day and terrible the next."
Williams baffled the Southern Miss hitters through the game tonight allowing only four hits and two runs while striking out four in the complete game effort.
Southern Miss had only two hits and three base runners through eight innings and collected two hits and three runners reached base in the ninth.
Monroe started the scoring in the top of the second as Matt Collins drew a walk and came around to score on a RBI single by Jordy Porche who advanced to third as the ball got past Michael Ewing. Porche came around to score on a RBI single by Nick Wade to make the score 2-0.
The Warhawks added another run in the top of the third as Jon Prevost was hit by a pitch, Ben Soignier walked and Collins singled to centerfield to load the bases with no one out and end the Day for Scott Copeland.
Copeland lasted only two innings giving up three runs on three hits while walking three and striking out four.
Jonathon Johnston came in relief of Copeland and worked out of the bases loaded, no one out jam allowing only one run on a high-chop infield single by Porche to put ULM up 3-0.
La. Monroe added to their lead with a two-RBI double by Prevost just over the glove of Golden Eagle third baseman Josh Fields down the left field line. Collins added another RBI with a single to right center to make the score 6-0.
Southern Miss recorded their first hit of the game in a big way as Joey Archer delivered a solo home run to centerfield start the bottom of the fifth inning. For Archer it was his second consecutive game with a home run as his fourth of the season.
Monroe added another run on a RBI single by Matt Laird off Seth Hester in the top of the seventh inning.
Prevost belted a two-run home run off new pitcher Moses Munoz to put La. Monroe up 9-1 in the top of the eighth.
Sothern Miss managed to string together a couple of hits and scratch out a late run in the ninth. Michael Ewing drew his second walk of the game and Kameron Brunty singled through the right side.
Nick Smith collected his first career hit a solid RBI-single to right field to score Ewing from third to end the scoring at 9-2.
Sothern Miss is scheduled to return to action tomorrow vs. No 11 Ole Miss at "The Pete," However heavy rain is expected in the Hattiesburg area throughout the night and into tomorrow.
