Last Week in Review:
Southern Miss (13-8, 1-2 CUSA) won two games over ranked teams with a victory over No. 25 Mississippi State on Tuesday and the series Finale over No. 7 Rice on Sunday.
Southern Miss took an early 10-1 lead and held on to defeat instate rival and No. 25 ranked Mississippi State 10-7 in front of 7,947 fans at Trustmark Park in Pearl, Miss. Tuesday evening. The crowd was the second largest in Trustmark Park history.
The win marks the third consecutive victory over the Bulldogs for Southern Miss, including the two wins last season in Hattiesburg.
Against Rice on Sunday Southern Miss scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning highlighted by Joey Archer's walk-off RBI single to propel the Golden Eagles over No. 7 Rice in front of 3,182 fans at Pete Taylor Park.
The Golden Eagles dropped the first two games of the Rice series and a midweek contest against Northern Colorado on Wednesday.
TWIB Notes:
· Southern Miss Miss defeated No. 25 Mississippi State on a neutral field on Tuesday 10-7 and No 7. Rice at home on Sunday 5-4
· Taylor Walker has hit in 18 straight games including nine multi hit games this season
· Bo Davis made his return to the lineup last Saturday after undergoing minor knee surgery causing him to miss nearly two weeks and seven games. Since his return he is hitting .440 (11-25) with 10 runs scored and nine RBI to go along with three home runs and eight walks He has hit safely in 13 of the 14 games he has played in this season
· The Golden Eagle offense has scored 178 runs on 240 hits through 21 games this season, averaging 8.5 runs per game and 11.4 hits per game on the season
· Southern Miss is 142-8 over the last five seasons when they have a lead after the sixth innings, they are 10-1 this season
- Joey Arched delivered a walk-off RBI single to score Dozier and propel Southern Miss past No. 7 Rice on Sunday
The Week's Opponents:
Louisiana Monroe (11-10, 4-5 Sun Belt) returns the trip that Southern Miss made to Monroe the first of the month. The Golden Eagles defeated ULM by scoring two runs in the tenth innings to take a 4-2 road victory.
The Warhawks host Harvard in a rare Monday afternoon game at Warhawk Field. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. in the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
Southern Miss will host No. 11 Ole Miss on Wednesday in the first of two meetings this season. The teams will also play on April 28 at Trustmark Park. The two teams spilt last season's series with Southern Miss scoring two in the ninth to tie the game and Corey Stevens delivering a walk off home run in the bottom of the tenth in the Golden Eagles 3-2 victory.
Junior Rebel outfielder Jordan Henry was named Southeastern Conference Player of the Week after helping lead the Rebels to a series win over No. 24 Alabama, the Rebels claimed the weekend series with wins on Friday and Saturday, but missed out on the sweep with the Sunday loss.
UCF had a tough opening series of league play, dropping all three games at No. 23 East Carolina. Senior C Brandon Romans has homered in three of his last four games to give him eight on the season. His previous career-high was two homers.
Last Wednesday, he was named a candidate for the Johnny Bench Award, given to the nation's top collegiate catcher. Junior IF Shane Brown's hitting streak remained intact last week as he stretched it to a career-best 14 games. Senior IF Colin Arnold was the team's top hitter last week, going 7-for-19 (.368) with a double and two runs scored. The Knights have hit 26 home runs this year through 22 games. That is already more than the entire 2007 season when UCF hit 25 homers in 59 games. Romans leads the club with his eight round-trippers, while senior IF Kiko Vazquez has four.
Record Watch:
- Brian Dozier needs only 24 hits to break Trey Sutton's school career hit record of 312
- Dozier needs only 6 singles to break the school's single record of 224 held currently by Trey Sutton
- With 12 hits Dozier will join Sutton as the only Golden Eagle players in school history to accumulate 300 career hits
- Bo Davis recorded two triples already this season to tie the school's career triple record of 13 set by Chad Herbert from 1989-92
