HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss completed the three game sweep over visiting Lehigh University by winning Sunday afternoon 12-2 at Pete Taylor Park.
"I thought Copeland was really good this afternoon" head coach Corky Palmer said. "I was also very pleased with the way our younger guys played this entire weekend."
Starting pitching was solid once again for Southern Miss as Scott Copeland held Lehigh to two runs on seven hits scattered through six innings while striking out four.
Wade Weathers worked two innings of hitless ball and Collin Cargill worked the final inning allowing only one hit.
Southern Miss started the scoring in the top of the first as Bo Davis came around to score on a ground ball double play hit by James Ewing for an early 1-0 lead.
Ewing picked up his first official RBI of the game in the bottom of the third drawing a bases loaded walk to force home Taylor Walker. Kameron Brunty followed with and RBI single to left field and Joey Archer broke the game open with a two RBI single for a 5-0 Golden Eagle advantage.
Southern Miss continued the rally as Brunty took home on a throwing error by Lehigh catcher Bill Swenson as Archer stole second base for another Golden Eagle run. Davis legged out an infield single with the bases loaded to force home Archer for the sixth run of the inning.
Lehigh added their first earned run of the weekend in the top of the sixth inning as Andrew Russell tripled home Kevin Mihalik, breaking a streak of 23.2 innings that the Golden Eagle pitches staff had worked without allowing an earned run.
The Mountain Hawks added their second run of the game after three consecutive infield singles including the RBI single by Ryan Gaydos which bounced off of second base allowing Greg Angelo to score from second and cut the Golden Eagle lead to 7-2.
Kyle Maxie added a RBI single in the bottom of the eighth to score Brunty who doubled to lead off the inning. Corey Stevens continued the rally with his second home run of the season, a three-run shot to right-center field to give Southern Miss an 11-2 lead.
James Ewing laced an RBI single to centerfield allowing Davis to score from third and cap a five run eighth inning.
The news was not all good this weekend as Palmer announced after the game that second baseman James Ewing will have minor knee surgery Monday morning keeping him out of the lineup for about the next 10 days.
Southern Miss returns to action Tuesday afternoon as UNO visits Pete Taylor Park. First pitch is set for 4:00 p.m.
