Southern Miss Falls To Tulane, 77-60

NEW ORLEANS, La. - Tulane's Brittany Lindsey scored a game-high 31 points, including 20 second half points in leading Tulane past Southern Miss, 77-60, in Conference USA action Thursday night.
Pauline led Southern Miss (17-9, 10-3) with 21 points with Stephanie Helgeson adding 15 points and a game-high 14 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season. Tanesha Washington had 11 points off the bench.
"You have to commend Tulane for the way they came out and played tonight," Coach Joye Lee-McNelis said. "They came at us and gave us everything we wanted. They did a great job defensively and did a great job of taking advantage of our mismatch situations.
"I was disappointed in the way we tried to defend their high-low action tonight," said McNelis. "We had several defensive breakdowns. Once we got down so far, we used a lot of energy trying to get back into the game. "
The Green Wave (15-12, 7-6) used a 17-5 run over a span of 5:10 to take a 14-point lead, 57-43, and never looked back. Southern Miss was able to cut the lead to nine, 69-60, with 2:28 to go in the game, but Tulane connected on 6-of-7 free throws while limiting the Lady Eagles to one shot on offense to seal the win. The loss was the ninth straight for Southern Miss in Fogelman Arena.
"I am proud of the way we kept fighting," McNelis said. "We could have easily given up but we didn't. I applaud the effort in us trying to come back."
Chassity Brown came off the bench to score 19 points, followed by Indira Kaljo with 12 and Ashley Langford chipped in 11.
What started as a slow walk quickly turned into a track meet as both teams struggled the first two minutes to start the game.
Tulane got on the scoreboard first when Lindsey hit the first basket, but Southern Miss responded with a layup by Love 10 seconds later. The score went back and forth before the Lady Eagles five unanswered points for a 9-4 lead. Tulane got within one, 8-9, but Southern Miss put together an 11-5 run, taking a seven point lead, 20-13, at the 9:50 mark.
The Lady Eagles held a 24-17 point advantage before Tulane used a 12-4 run to take a 29-28 lead with 3:13 remaining before the half. Southern Miss regained the lead briefly on two Kendra Reed free throws with, but Tulane scored the final basket of the half, taking a 31-30 lead into intermission.
Southern Miss concludes its road schedule, traveling to El Paso to take on UTEP Saturday in an 8:05 p.m., tip.
