Women's Tennis Team Completes Fall Play

HOUSTON, Texas - The Southern Miss women's tennis team completed its fall season at the Alonti Cougar Fall Draw hosted by the University of Houston, Nov. 6-8.
Sophomore Zoe Lee won the singles Flight E, dropping only two sets. Lee defeated Shana Lee (Lee College) in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1, then, knocked off Jessica Lange (Tulane) in a three-set thriller, 3-6, 6-1, 10-8. On Saturday, Lee came back with a win over Kwynn (McNeese State), 4-6, 6-3, 10-2 and completed the run with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Cally Woerner (Sam Houston State).
Freshman Vroni van Berlo advanced to the semifinals of the Flight A draw, defeating Jodie Tiley (UT-Martin) in her opening match, 6-3, 6-4. She followed with a 3-6, 7-5, 10-8 win over Bryony Hunter (Houston). She fell in the semifinals to Tulane's Mariam Kurdadze, 6-4, 6-0.
Sophomore Elja van Berlo opened her Flight B singles' match with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Frederique Sunstrum (Lee College), before falling to Hila Elster (Tulane), 6-2, 2-6, 10-7.
Stephanie Dellocono lost her opening match to Ilona Serchenko (McNeese State), 7-5, 6-2, but picked up a win in the consolation draw with a 6-4, 6-1, win over Martie Wahl of UT-Martin.
Laruen Gutterman knocked off Paola Montenvega (Stephen F. Austin), 6-3, 3-6, 10-7, in her opening match in the Flight C draw. She lost to Victoria Martinez (McNeese State), 7-6, 6-2.
Shannon Rogers won her first match in Flight D Singles with a 6-1, 6-0, win over Huong Huynh (Lee College). She lost to Neila Starratt (Houston), 6-4, 7-5.
In doubles' action, Dellocono and Gutterman lost to Zara Harutyunyen and A. Jogasuria (Akron), 8-5. The duo came back in the consolation draw to defeat Ralista Pirdopska and Victoria Martinez (McNeese State), 8-0.
Vroni and Elja van Berlo defeated Rebekka Hanle and Rebecca Lin (Rice), 8-2, but lost to Roxana Enica and Alina Shazhko (Stephen F. Austin), 8-6.
Rounding out the doubles play, Rogers and Lee lost to Ilona Serchenko and Kwynn Biggs (McNeese State), 9-8 (10). The two also lost to Carolina Gerber and Marcela Fonseca (Tulane), 8-5.
