HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss women's tennis team got a chance to play their first matches this fall season, hosting the Halloween Classic Invite on their home courts.
The Golden Eagles finished the tournament posting a combined 14 wins in singles and doubles play against the tournament field that included Jacksonville State, Lamar, Nicholls State, Northwestern State and Southeastern Louisiana.
"It was a great weekend and I was really proud of the way the girls competed," Coach Raynie Theis said. "We are now looking forward to Houston."
Senior Lauren Gutterman concluded her weekend with a 3-1 record in singles and 1-1 in doubles with Stephanie Dellocono. Sophomore Elja van Berlo also finished with a 3-1 record in singles competition and teamed with sister Vroni to go undefeated in doubles.
After sitting out all of last season, Dellocono saw her first action since last fall and finished 1-3 in singles and 1-1 in doubles.
Freshman Vroni van Berlo also finished 1-3 in singles, while Shannon Rogers went 1-2 in singles and 1-1 in doubles. Rogers teamed with Zoe Lee to win a doubles' match on Sunday. Lee did not compete in any other matches because of a sprained ankle. Rogers finished 1-2 in singles play.
Freshman Frances Askew competed in her first collegiate matches this weekend and posted a 1-2 record in singles, while Lauren Sanford lost her only match she played in.
Southern Miss returns to action, when the Eagles travel to Houston for the Houston Fall Invite, Nov. 6-8.
