HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss first basemen Adam Doleac and Mark Ellis collected seven RBI and the Golden Eagle pitchers held the Carey hitters to seven hits as Southern Miss defeated cross town William Carey 13-1 in fall baseball action Sunday afternoon at Pete Taylor Park.
Junior DH Adam Doleac collected four RBI on a three-run home run in the second inning and a RBI single in the seventh to lead the Southern Miss offense.
Junior college transfer Mark Ellis added in three RBI on an single in the bottom of the fifth and a two-run home run in the bottom of the 13th.
Eight different Golden Eagle pitchers worked the 14 inning exhibition game, allowing only one earned run and seven hits while striking out 15 and walking only two. As a staff they faced only eight hitters over the minimum.
"I think the thing that impressed me the most was that we played 14 innings of errorless baseball this afternoon," head coach Scott Berry said. "We really try to teach pitching and defense and our pitchers stuck out 15 hitters while walking only two, they filled the zone with strikes all afternoon and let the defense work behind them."
Fans noticed a few changes from last season's team including the move of Joey Archer from first base, where he started 63 games last season, to his new role at third base this year. Archer showed he could handle the hot corner today with six putouts from third base.
"I was really proud of Joey and the plays he made at third today, moving him to third is something we have looked at this fall and we are counting on him to make that transition and based on today I thought he did a great job with it."
Archer collected two hits on the afternoon and scored three runs while driving in one.
Making room for Archer at third base was the move of Taylor Walker to second base to replace the loss of senior James Ewing. Walker had two hits and a RBI on the afternoon.
Junior College transfer Marc Bourgeios got the start in right field this afternoon and had three hits, including a triple, to go along with two runs scored and an RBI.
On the mound Cody Schlagel worked two perfect innings, while new comers Mandella Mingo and Josh Jones both worked a perfect inning a piece.
Reigning Conference USA Pitcher of the Year Todd McInnis got the start on the bump and worked three innings allowing only one hit while striking out three.
Senior Scott Copeland worked three innings allowing two hits and one run, on a RBI single by Jacob Casey, while striking out a game high five hitters.
Junior Seth Hester faced on batter over the minimum in his two innings of work while fanning two.
Golden Eagle Closer Collin Cargill allowed two hits in his inning of work, but struck out two Crusader hitters and sophomore Matt Warren worked the final inning for Southern Miss, allowing two hits and used a double play to keep Carey off the board.
The Golden Eagles will return to action next Sunday as they play their annual Black and Gold Game.
