HOUSTON - The Southern Miss soccer team opened their five game road trip with a 2-1 loss at the University of Houston Friday evening.
The Golden Eagles (4-9-0, 0-7-0 C-USA) fell behind early as the Cougars struck for the games first goal just under three minutes into the game when Katelyn Rhodes connected for her third goal of the season.
Southern Miss battled back to tie the game at one as Samantha Polley scored her first goal of the season with Jana Mason and Sarah DeFatta assisting in the 19th minute.
However Houston (4-8-2, 2-3-2 C-USA) was able to answer with a goal just over two minutes later with what turned out to be the golden goal by Lauri Byrne at the 21:17 mark
The two teams played the next 68 minutes scoreless.
"Giving up early goals has forced us to play catch up in too many games this season," head coach Scott Ebke said. "We battled back to tie the score at one then had a let down three minutes later for their game winner. They made us pay for our mistakes tonight."
The Golden Eagles only managed to strike two shots in the game, both by Polley, while the Cougars struck for 21 total shots.
Houston also held the advantage in corner kicks with 14 compared to Southern Miss' one.
The Golden Eagles will remain in Houston to play Rice Sunday afternoon and attempt to pick up their first Conference USA win of the season.
