PDF BOX SCORE: Miss. State at Southern Miss
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss soccer team fell in what turned out to be an offensive loaded game 2-1 to Mississippi State at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex Sunday afternoon.
"I thought we played hard this afternoon, we just have to find a way to get the ball in the back of the net," head coach Scott Ebke said. "Give credit to Mississippi State they fought for both their goals this afternoon. They are a good opponent that gave us a good challenge this afternoon and that will help us headed into conference play this weekend."
Southern Miss (4-3-1) came out shooting from the opening kick and did not let up firing 21 total shots including seven on goal this afternoon. Senior Sarah McFadden led the attack with 11 shots, six on goal and scored her third goal of the season. The Bulldogs managed 12 total shots on the afternoon, five on goal.
"We just have to keep shooting, if we do that then eventually they are going to start falling for us," Ebke added.
The Golden Eagles have tallied 58 shots over the last three games.
McFadden took the feed from Bianca Ontiveros who served the ball in from the right wing perfectly to McFadden allowing her to one-touched it past the State keeper for an early 1-0 lead in the 13th minute.
However Mississippi State (5-4) answered with a goal in the 33rd minute as Tarah Henderson was able to convert from inside the box past Golden Eagle keeper Holly Cox for her third goal of the season.
The Bulldogs took the lead just before halftime when Heather Buttery converted her first goal of the season picking up a loose ball inside the box and sliding it inside the far post for a 2-1 advantage.
Today's game ended the non-conference portion of the season as the Golden Eagles open Conference USA play this weekend as they visit Memphis on Friday and UAB on Sunday.
"A new season starts on Friday. Memphis and UAB are two very good opponents looking at the success they have had the past few years. They are both very well coached and play a strong game of soccer," Ebke said.
Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. Friday evening at Memphis and 2:00 on Sunday at UAB. Live stats will be available in southernmiss.com for both games.
