Soccer Drops C-USA Opener at Memphis, 2-0

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Southern Miss soccer team dropped a 2-0 game to Memphis in the Conference USA opener Friday evening at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex in Memphis, Tennessee.
The Tigers entered the game ranked No. 10 in the region and a year removed from the NCAA Tournament.
"We battled a very good Memphis team that was able to move the ball extremely well," head coach Scott Ebke said. "We had moments where we played very good soccer but need to correct a few mistakes to get positive results in the upcoming games."
The two teams took a scoreless tie to the half thanks to four saves by Southern Miss keeper Holly Cox. Memphis out shot the Golden Eagles 12-2 in the first half, with Sarah McFadden recording both shots for Southern Miss.
The defending C-USA Champion Tigers (5-2-1, 1-0-0) broke the tie in the 63rd minute as Lizzy Simonin picked up a rebound from a shot that deflected off the crossbar back into the box for the game's first goal.
The Tigers struck again in the 75th minute as Lizzy Hilderbrant slid the ball inside the near post past Cox for a 2-0 lead.
Memphis was able to outshoot Southern Miss 22-4 in the game, though only six of their shots were on goal.
The Golden Eagles (4-4-1, 0-1-0) will return to Conference USA action Sunday afternoon in Birmingham, Ala. against UAB with the kickoff set for 1:00 p.m.
"With the C-USA season upon us now, every game is going to be a battle. We have to continue to work for each other," Ebke added.
