ITTA BENA, Miss. - The Southern Miss soccer team picked up their fourth win of the season and improved to 4-2-1 with a 1-0 win at Mississippi Valley State Tuesday evening.
"Any win is a good win," head coach Scott Ebke said. "We somehow found a way to win tonight and I am proud of this team and their effort."
The game was scoreless through the first half and at halftime with the Golden Eagles just missing a few chances to score.
Sarah McFadden scored the games only goal in the 52nd minute as she converted a penalty kick. Amy Skeet picked up the hard foul inside the box to allow McFadden the opportunity to convert the penalty kick.
Holly Cox picked up the win in goal for the Golden Eagles with five saves, including two at point blank range to keep Mississippi Valley off the scoreboard. In the 70th minute as Cox was making a point blank save she was kicked in the thigh and had to leave the game. McFadden moved from her usual forward spot into goal and picked up three saves.
"I had no idea McFadden could play in goal," Ebke added. "We were just looking for someone who would embrace the opportunity to play a different position, she is an outstanding athlete. The back line played extremely well defending as many shots as possible as well."
Southern Miss came into the game with only one healthy keeper as Christina Duvall and Hannah Vanderboegh are both nursing injuries and were unavailable for tonight's match.
The Golden Eagles scored what appeared to be the second goal of the game as time expired when Renee Hrapmann fired a shot into the back of the next from about eight yards out and appeared to beat the buzzer, however the goal was waved off and ruled that time had expired.
Southern Miss outshot the Devilettes 15 to 10 and both team had eight shots on goal.
The Golden Eagles return to action Sunday afternoon at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex as they host instate rival Mississippi State. Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m.
