BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Southern Miss dropped its regular season finale at UAB 12-2 Saturday afternoon at Young Memorial Field.
The Golden Eagles finished the regular season in second place in league play with a 38-18 overall record and 15-9 in Conference USA action.
Brian Dozier did extend his hitting streak to 17 games, but the Golden Eagles could not overcome UAB pounding out 15 hits in the seven-inning game.
The Blazers leadoff hitter Jonathan Merritt started the scoring in the bottom of the first as he lined a double off the wall before being sacrificed to third base and then scoring on a Brian Leach wild pitch. Luke Stewart added an RBI single to put the Blazers up 2-0.
Southern Miss scored their first run in the third as Keith Winstead singled and throwing error by the UAB catcher. Winstead scored on a fielder's choice by Bo Davis to cut the UAB lead in half 2-1.
UAB answered right back with a single run in the bottom of the third on an RBI single by Brint Hardy.
The Blazers added to their lead as Ryan Keedy added his 27th double of the season in the bottom of the fifth inning scoring two runs and end the day for Leach. Hardy then added his second RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly to score Keedy and put the Blazers up by five.
James Ewing cut the gap for the Eagles with an RBI single to score Brian Dozier, who singled to start the inning. That hit extended Dozier's hitting streak.
UAB got the run right back and more as Josh Billeuad surrendered a two-out bases-loaded walk to nine-hole hitter Allen Aubin. Collin Cargill entered the game in relief of Billeaud and walked Luke Stewart with the bases loaded and allowed a two-run single to Hardy, both with the bases loaded to make the score 10-2.
Southern Miss will return to action on Wednesday in the 2008 Conference USA Tournament Wednesday afternoon against UCF with first pitch scheduled for 4:30 at Turchin Stadium in New Orleans.
