HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss shot a final round 313 to give them a one-shot victory over Louisiana-Monroe at the Lady Eagle Invitational in Hattiesburg, Miss. The tournament was played at Canebrake Country Club.
It is Southern Miss' first tournament victory since the 2003 Lady Eagle Invitational.
Freshman Virginia Espejo shot a 74 for a two-round total of eight-over 144 to finish in a tie for third place. It was her second top five finish of the season.
Sophomore Samantha Holt closed with an 81 for a total of 152 and a seventh place finish. Freshman Jennifer Judge earned her first career top ten finish, shooting a final round 77 for a total of 155 and a ninth-place finish.
Sophomore Rebecka Nilsson and Clara Viladomiu, both playing as individuals, finished in a tie for tenth. Nilsson shot a final round 77, while Viladomiu shot a 76 to finish with 156 strokes.
Senior Jennifer Bodemann tied for 23rd-place after shooting an 81 for a two-round total of 164. Juniors Heather Golden and Kate Burns, playing as an individual, finished in a tie for 28th-place. Golden shot an 81, while Burns closed with an 80.
Sophomore Ashley Joubert (172 - T35th), and senior Helena Backlund (181 - T41st), rounded out play for Southern Miss.
The Lady Eagles won the team competition with 621 strokes, one shot ahead of Louisiana-Monroe (622). Marshall finished in third place with 628 strokes. Birmingham-Southern shot a 631 to earn a fourth place finish. West Florida finished in fifth place with 632 strokes, followed by Jackson State (641), Texas-Pan American (652) and Kentucky Wesleyan (724).
Southern Miss closes the spring season next week when it travels to El Paso, Texas for the Conference USA Championship, April 14-16.
