Baseball Defeats Southeastern Louisiana 12-7
HAMMOND, La.. - Southern Miss pounded out a season high 17 hits and scored 12 runs in a 12-7 road victory at Southeastern Louisiana Wednesday evening.
The Golden Eagles came out swinging the bats tonight with seven different players collecting double digit hits. Kyle Maxie had two hits including a home run, three RBI and two runs scored. Drew Carson collected two hits with a double, two RBI and scored a run.
Chris Matesich had a three hits game with two RBI and two runs including a triple.
Southern Miss starting pitcher Brian Leach picked up his second win of the season but only after settling down after a rocky start. Leach threw six innings allowing four runs, three earned on five hits. Jonathan Johnston entered the game in the seventh and threw one pitch to get a ground ball double play.
In the top of the third inning Trey Sutton delivered a double to left center field for hit 300th career hit, become the first Southern Miss player to ever achieve the 300 hit milestone. He had two doubles in the game.
Southern Miss struck for the games first run in the top of the second inning as Chris Matesich hit a soft single to left field and scored from first base on a double off the center field wall by Trey Cuevas to put Southern Miss on top 1-0.
Southeastern tied the game by scoring a run without the benefit of a hit in the bottom of the second inning. Brian McCants drew a walk and advanced to second on a Leach wild pitch. He moved to third on an infield ground ball and scored on second Leach wild pitch to tie the game at one.
The Lions took the lead in the bottom of the third as catcher Andrew Hickman hit his first career home run over the left field wall giving Southeastern a 2-1 lead. Cass Hargis singles to right field to extend the rally and Ty Summerlin followed with a single to right field and both runners advanced a base as the throw for left fielder Drew Carson was kicked out of third baseman Chris Matesich's glove as he was nailed at third base. Brandon Street was intentionally walked to load the bases and Xavier Qualls hit a just missed a grand slam as he picked up a sacrifice fly to right field. Leach uncorked a wild pitch to allow the third run of the inning to cross the plate and put the Lions up 4-1.
Southern Miss answered right back in the top of the fourth inning as Kyle Maxie drilled the first pitch of the inning over the left field wall for his sixth home run of the season. Trey Cuevas and Chris Matesich both singled to continue the rally before advancing on a Chris Cappo wild pitch. Bo Davis picked up and RBI on a ground out allowing Cuevas to score from third and cut the lead to 4-3.
The Golden Eagles took the lead in the top of the fifth as James Ewing led off the inning with a double and Trey Sutton was hit by a pitch to end the game for SELA starter Chris Cappo, Drew Carson greeted new pitcher Adam Jones by drilling his first pitch off the right-center field wall for an RBI double to score James Ewing and tie the game at four. A Jones wild pitch allowed Sutton to score the second run of the inning and put Southern Miss back on top. Kyle Maxie followed with an RBI single to center field to score Carson and give Southern Miss a 6-4 lead.
Southern Miss added to their lead in the top of the eighth as Vrian Dozier hit his second double of the evening to lead off the inning, James Ewing singled to right field and Trey Sutton was hit by a pitch for the second time in the game to load the bases with out any outs.
Drew Carson reached out and slapped an opposite field single to right field for an RBI to keep the bases loaded. Kyle Maxie followed with an infield ground ball fielder choice for his third RBI of the game. Chris Matesich followed with his first triple of the season to clear the bases and pick up two RBI. Bo Davis added an RBI on a fielders choice to make the score 12-4.
Southeastern added two runs in the bottom of the eight inning on a bases loaded single by Brian Ernest off of Wade Weathers to make the score 12-5 and another bases loaded RBI single, this time by Andrew Hickman to pull the Lions within six runs of Southern Miss.
